How 1 Simple Task That Takes Less Than 20 Minutes Can Help You Close More Transactions

One of the biggest goals of doing your own real estate SEO work is getting the search engines to take notice of your website and it's contents. At first this seems like a simple goal, after all the it's the search engine's job to learn about my website, right?

Since the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN have billions of pages to crawl they just might not take notice of your website. When you take a few minutes to make their job easier of learning more about your website you will get some major benefits. Not just a small benefit, but a benefit that can have the search engines sending thousands of extra people to your website each and every month.

A Sitemap Is A Simple Roadmap To Your Website

When many people think of a sitemap, they think of a complicated page that can take hours to develop and could cost them $100's of dollars for a professional to create. Sadly, many have probably paid $100's of dollars for this feature, when in reality you can create it yourself in less than 20 minutes.

For a sitemap to be effective there are 5 steps that you need to complete to be effective. Here are the first 3 that you need to do.

  1. Easily accessible - The sitemap needs to be easily accessible from any page on your real estate website. If you can't find a link to your sitemap in less than 30 seconds then there is a good chance the search engine won't find it either. Make sure it is easily found, like in the footer of your website.

  2. List the pages on your website - A sitemap needs to easily list the pages on your website. The page can be simple, but don't leave out any pages. Start with a format that highlights the most important pages on your website and then lists the less important pages on your website.

  3. Keep it up to date - As your website grows, so will your sitemap. Your sitemap needs to give visitors (and search engines) an easy way to see the latest new pages on your website. Each and every time you create a new page on your website (or even update it) your sitemap needs to be updated. Keeping this updated will keep the search engines coming back to discover more about what you are doing.

Over 90% of real estate websites are missing a simple sitemap and so they are missing out on traffic that the search engines can be sending their direction every month!

Help The Search Engines Discover More About Your Website To Increase Your Rankings

Each search engine works a bit differently. At the end of the day, they do want to discover more about your website but they have different methods on how they will perform that task. To give your website the best chance to rise in the search engine rankings consider making it easier on the search engines to learn about your sitemap.

You certainly want each of the major 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) to know that your sitemap exits, but how do you let them know? Unfortunately you can't just call them up or e-mail, you have to make it much easier than that. You have to communicate with them in a method that they understand.

When you want to help Google understand more about the sitemap on your website, you can simple use the Google webmaster tools. This is a FREE and easy to use tool that you can use to let Google know all about your website! Yahoo has a tool like this as well.
